The philosopher Johann Gottlieb Fichte wrote the following admonition to the young August, Goethe’s son, in the family book: “The nation has great demands on you, only son of the only one in our age. Count me among those who will observe most attentively whether you worthy of forming one day to fill the Father’s place, since I am among those who understand His worth most deeply and love them without envy. May this sheet then admonish you, or even comfort you.” The person addressed in this way was 15 years old at the time.
