Sir Simon Rattle’s career as a concert conductor is striking. He worked in Birmingham for a long time, then as chief conductor of the Berlin Philharmonic, music director of the London Symphony Orchestra and soon with the Orchestra of the Bavarian Radio in Munich. With all the urge to the symphonic Simon Rattle, in two years he will be seventy, the authentic opera conductor he always was at the podium of the big stages. What he is now doing with Wolfgang A. Mozart’s youth opera “Idomeneo” at the Berlin State Opera affirmed. And there he, the trained percussionist, heats up the sound of the overture so massively and expressively at the rostrum of the Staatskapelle, as if he wanted to surpass the title of the work: “Dramma per musica”.
