Will the giant tree in the Berlin Schaubühne in Chekhov’s “The Seagull” become as legendary as the birch trees in Peter Stein, back in 1984, in the “Three Sisters” in the same house? He would have what it takes. The director and Schaubühne boss Thomas Ostermeier and his favorite stage designer – with the funny name in this context – Jan Pappelbaum built an impressive, spreading plane tree with a mighty trunk, thick branches and lovely birdsong in Hall B of the house.
