As Christmas 2020 the series Bridgerton on Netflix, a pleasant shock went through the viewership, exhausted by the pandemic. Reason one: The historical romance was full of very explicit sex scenes. Reason two: Your very attractive performers were not all white, as has long been the norm in this genre, but had all possible skin colors. The Queen of England was played by the dark-skinned Golda Rosheuvel. The dashing Duke of Hastings: black. The courtiers: black with dreadlocks. This aristocratic diversity was only explained in passing. The king just married a black woman decades ago, and the world has been different since then.
