Pictures for the pain: Sabrina Janesch’s novel “Sibir” – culture

From

Catherine Kahlweit

Sabrina Janesch drove thousands of kilometers to feel and understand her father’s life story and trauma. She traveled from Germany via Moscow to Kazakhstan to the steppe village, where her father and grandparents had once been taken from Galicia by Red Army soldiers. And, as she said in an interview, with the help of maps, drawings and descriptions she didn’t find the first cave-like dwelling underground, but found the small, dilapidated house in which the Nemzi, the Germans, lived afterwards.
