It was May 18, 2014, on which the literary scholar and practicing historian Wolfgang Schivelbusch celebrated his farewell to New York. A lot of people were standing in his small high-rise apartment on the 25th floor on Greenwich Street in Tribeca: Research colleagues from the various universities and libraries in the city were there, but also, for example, the young editor-in-chief of “Cabinet” magazine from over in Brooklyn. There were drinks and there were crackers, but above all there were books to choose from that might help you further. Because Schivelbusch didn’t want to take them with him to Germany when he finally returned after almost four and a half decades of commuting between New York, where he spent the winter months doing research and writing, and Berlinwhere he spent the summers with his wife.
