Late one evening Joachim Kersten was sitting somewhere in Schleswig-Holstein, it must have been at the North College in Rendsburg, and in an intimate circle: he only became a lawyer, he said, because he could not have afforded so many books in a literary profession. People laughed as if the sentence had just been a joke. But it wasn’t him: Joachim Kersten was a lawyer who didn’t want to be right. He was a man of letters who practiced the profession of a lawyer and a lawyer who was actually a writer.
