Leni Riefenstahl is upset. “How am I going to finish this goddamn movie if Hitler isn’t making progress with his war?” she screams. Riefenstahl has been working for ages on “Tiefland,” the melodrama that will be her last feature film as a director and that will later earn her accusations that Sinti and Roma were forced to be recruited as “Southern” extras. She has just scolded her own leading actress, also (a younger) Leni Riefenstahl, for her mediocrity (“Do you have pain, rheumatism, vaginal cramps?”). Now she’s annoyed because she can’t shoot on the original Spanish locations because of the stupid war.
