In the Ruhr area, hundreds of thousands of newspaper readers still remember the damage such a crime from the anonymous network can cause: It was two days before Christmas 2020 when suddenly none West German General Newspaper or NRZ more was in the mailbox. Also at the kiosk – nothing! For 36 days, many of the Funke Medien Group’s 13 nationwide papers were only published as emergency editions. The WAZ, for example, had to be limited to eight pages, and the local sections for Duisburg, Essen and Bochum were only available online.
