Historically, African slave labor played a far greater role than previously assumed – without it, the transatlantic alliance known as the West would never have come about. That is the thesis that the US journalist Howard French put forward in his meticulously researched and shocking book “Africa and the Making of the Modern World”. French, 65, was a correspondent for the New York Times in Central America, Africa, China and Japan. An interview via Zoom.
