Two days after French President Emmanuel Macron laid the ax on the western alliance and China to an even more aggressive policy towards Taiwan, tones of appeasement came from Paris. “The USA are our allies,” it said on Tuesday from the Élysée Palace, “we share common values.” On Sunday, the world, especially the European part, was not so sure. During his visit to China, Macron in an interview warned that Europe must not allow itself to become entangled in “foreign crises” in the conflict over Taiwan, but must adopt an independent strategic position, become a “third superpower”, of course under French leadership. And then he had dropped the bad word about Europe as a “follower” of the USA.
