As a civil engineer, I tend to explain the world with numbers. So: 30 percent of CO₂ emissions, 40 percent of energy consumption, 50 percent of resource consumption, 60 percent of waste and 70 percent of surface sealing can be traced back to the construction sector. Building is more environmentally relevant than anything else. There is a lot of well-intentioned advice on what to do or not to do, but the future will be decided in building. That’s where the levers for climate protection are found, that’s where the energy transition realized – or messed up.
