The Leipzig Book Fair has removed the “Islamic Center Hamburg” from the list of exhibitors. “According to the Hamburg Office for the Protection of the Constitution, it is closely linked to the Iranian regime and supports its actions that violate human rights,” the organizers said on Twitter. “For this reason we have today rejected the registration of the Islamic Center Hamburg (IZH) for the Leipzig Book Fair.
Minister of State for Culture Claudia Roth welcomed the decision: “It is up to the organizers to decide which stands are approved for the fair,” said the Greens politician in Berlin. “An organization that is obviously closely linked to the criminal Mullah regime in Iran has no place at the Leipzig Book Fair.”
The fair emphasized that it stands for freedom and human rights: “We underline this attitude with our events”. On the opening day of the fair, there will be an event dedicated to the death of Jina Mahsa Amini in Tehran in September 2022.
