The film is currently expected to pass $400 million by Sunday.
Avatar: After performing slightly below expectations at the domestic box office and being predicted to perform poorly in China due to a new COVID wave, It is highly unlikely that The Way of Water will surpass Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness as the year’s best global opening. The Way of Water has made $180 million worldwide thus far, with $127 million coming from international markets and $53 million coming from domestic markets.
After its first weekend, the long-awaited sequel from director James Cameron, which broke records in 2009, was expected to make between $450 million and $550 million worldwide. However, that number has now been lowered to $410 million. China is one of the 52 offshore territories where the movie is currently playing. The Method of Water got an uncommon (for a Hollywood film) discharge in the Center Realm, yet its expectations were run when another flood of the Covid provoked the closure of countless theaters.
Government sanctions and a robust evolution of the local industry have reduced the frequency of imports, despite the fact that Hollywood studios have spent the better part of the last decade catering to Chinese audiences. For instance, Jurassic World Dominion was the only notable Hollywood film to be released in China this year, earning slightly more than $150 million there. The first Avatar has made $200 million in China over the years and is still a popular tourist attraction.
After debuting in previews earlier in the week, The Way of Water was anticipated to earn $100 million at its Chinese opening. However, the projections have been reduced since then. The movie has made $44 million there so far, but not all of it has been added to the official total. Both have not received the entire $17 million that The Way of Water has received from Korea. The Way of Water, which was made with a reported $400 million budget, will need to make about $2 billion worldwide to break even. In comparison, the first movie made $241 million worldwide after five days of being released. In the first weekend, the first Avatar made $77 million domestically, leading many observers to predict doom. However, it was well-known to hold exceptionally well over the following weeks. With $760 million at the domestic box office and over $2.9 billion worldwide, it is still the highest-grossing movie ever.
Avengers: Infinity War holds the record for the biggest global debut. Final Destiny ($1.2 billion) This year, the worldwide opening of Doctor Strange 2 brought in $450 million, while Dominion brought in $392 million and Black Panther: $330 million were made by Wakanda Forever. Positive crowd gathering and a total absence of contest will help The Method of Water, highlighting returning stars Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldaña, remain above water throughout the following couple of weeks.
